Oct 10    More Than The Fundamentals of Communication
Whether you are a leader, employee, volunteer, or in a relationship of any kind, you are aware of the power of communication, positive and destructive. Not only are communication methods more numerous, but meaning and influence generate from speaking tone, words used, urban slang, expressions, GIF’s, emojis, all CAP lettering, all small lettering, inclusion of information, omission of data, and avoidance of contact. It all carries meaning. The opportunities for message misunderstanding, sarcastic and inappropriate responses, and destroyed relationships are constant and often, you do not even realize the impact. Time to learn what to expect, what to own, and ultimately realize healthier relationships-personally and professionally. Presenter: Barbara Wichman Free to all.

Oct 23    Take Charge of Your Health: A Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)
In just three weeks, October 2, 2018, the PMMC Health Institute begins hosting Take Charge of Your Health, a Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP). The program is a series of workshops, designed for adults age 55 and older* who want to take charge of their ongoing health problems such as arthritis, MS, fibromyalgia, COPD, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Developed by Stanford University, the program has been proven to help adults with chronic diseases find practical ways to deal with pain & fatigue, discover better nutrition & exercise choices, and learn better ways to talk with their family and doctor about their health. (It has actually been shown that program participants have fewer visits to physician offices and emergency rooms, even two years after participants completed the workshop!)

This FREE six-week program will be held every Tuesday from October 2 through November 6, 2018 from 9:30 am-12:00 noon at the PMMC Health Institute, 1975 Melissa Lane, Aurora 60506. Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, an invaluable resource book for anyone living with a chronic illness, is also provided free. Registrants need to call 877.737.4636. Oct 23    Libby Escobedo, PhD “Progress and Imperialism in 19th Century Landscape Painting”
British and American landscape became an increasingly powerful artistic medium during the “long 19th century” and reached a pinnacle of achievement with painters such as Turner, Constable, Cole and Moran. From English country estates and industrial towns to the vast panoramas of the American West, landscape paintings celebrated both natural and built environments, documented lived experiences and shaped public opinion and government policy. Beyond mere representation of the natural world, landscape painting became a means of representing colonial imperialism and faith in the value of progress. Not just pretty pictures, nineteenth-century landscape paintings need to be analyzed in a broader context to examine the cultural, historical and aesthetic constructions that shape these images. Aurora University professor of art history Dr. Libby Escobedo earned her bachelor’s in art history at UCLA before continuing on to graduate study at Bryn Mawr College where she focused on fourteenth-century English illuminated manuscripts. Escobedo joined the faculty at Aurora University as an assistant professor in fall 2007, teaching art history, humanities and interdisciplinary studies.
