Nov 1    Film: “The Central Park Five” (adult content)
Short description: “The Central Park Five” (2012) is a documentary film about the Central Park jogger case, directed by documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, his daughter Sarah Burns, and her husband, David McMahon. The case was one of the most publicized of the 1980s and its prosecution and aftermath led to important questions about race, class and a rush to judgment after horrific crimes. And/Or: A documentary that examines the 1989 case of five black and Latino teenagers who were wrongly convicted of the sexual assault of a white woman in Central Park. Long description: In 1989, five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and charged with brutally attacking and sexually assaulting a white female jogger in Central Park. News media swarmed the case, calling them a “wolfpack.” The five would spend years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit before the truth about what really happened became clear. With “The Central Park Five,” this story of injustice finally gets the attention it deserves. Based on Sarah Burns’ riveting book and co-directed by her husband, David McMahon, and father, the acclaimed documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, this incendiary film tells the riveting tale of innocent young men scapegoated for a heinous crime, and serves as a mirror for our times. Nov 2    John McCormack, PhD, Assistant Professor of Religion, presents “Here We Stand: Reformation and its 500-Year Legacy”
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his Ninety-Five Theses to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Little did he know that this gesture would launch doctrinal debates that tore apart the Christian Church, and with it, Europe. Luther would go on to rethink the very foundations of the individual’s relationship with God, and he inspired a widespread challenge to the authority of the traditional ecclesiastical hierarchy. The movements Luther inspired unleashed civil wars, made new media a tool of religious propaganda, rethought the relationship between church and state, and spread the idea of religious toleration as a virtue. Is the Protestant Reformation responsible for making us who we are today? This presentation will explore the lasting impact of the Protestant Reformation and ask how revisiting its history 500 years later might help our understanding of the complex role of religion in public life today.

He served as the nation’s secretary of transportation under President Obama from 2009 to 2013 and quickly became known as a bipartisan leader and skilled conciliator in a highly partisan environment. Nov 10    Fall Play: “Twelfth Night”
Short description: Shakespeare’s comedy of gender confusion, in which a girl disguises herself as a man to be near the Duke she adores, only to be pursued by the woman the Duke loves. Long description. Viola loves Orsino. Orsino loves Olivia. Olivia loves Viola. Malvolio loves himself. Love is certainly in the air in Illyria, but nothing is as it seems, especially when twins, sassy servants, a drunk uncle, a pirate and a merry band of fools are involved. This wise, wacky, and weirdly beautiful comedy about loss, identity and finding love in unexpected places is considered by many to be one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays for good reason.

Nov 22 - Jan 7    Elf: The Musical
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t belong, just be glad you’re not William “Buddy” Hobbes. When he was only a baby, Buddy crawled into Santa’s sack of presents and was whisked away to the North Pole where he lived as an elf for years. Buddy grew up thinking he was just like all the others. He took joy in doing elf things, like making toys. But there was always something off about him. He towers over his fellow elves and just doesn’t get cobbling. Buddy soon realizes the truth about being … gulp … human and goes in search of his father, a workaholic publisher. Imagine Buddy’s horror when he finds out his dad does not share his love for Christmas. In fact, he couldn’t care less about it. But this is the infectiously-cheerful wannabe elf who grew up with jolly old St. Nick, and a little problem like that won’t deter Buddy from changing people’s hearts and minds. Based on the hilarious 2003 Will Ferrell movie, Elf is one of those rare holiday shows that will have both kids and adults lighting up with laughter, humming tunes like “A Christmas Song” and “Sparklejollytwinklejingley” for days and rediscovering what it means to be a family. And Paramount has become the place that families head to for memorable holiday experiences. From the two-story Christmas tree in the lobby, to the thousands of sparkling lights adorning the banisters, to the carolers filling the air with song, you can’t help but get into the spirit the minute you walk through the doors. So this holiday season, join the Paramount family for the perfect feel-good show that will turn even the grumpiest of grinches into a happy-go-lucky bearer of Christmas cheer, singing loud for all to hear. Suggested Rating: G Out of respect for our patrons, children ages 2 and under are not permitted in the theatre. Out of respect for the artists and in adherence to the union rules we are contractually obligated to enforce, all photography and video recordings of the stage, as well as of the production itself (including audio recording) are strictly prohibited. This policy will be enforced.

Nov 30    AU Opera Workshop
Aurora University presents two one-act comedic operas. “The Telephone” by Menotti is a charming scene of a woman on a telephone and the frustration her boyfriend has in gaining her attention. Gilbert and Sullivan’s second collaboration, “Trial by Jury,” is a ludicrous story about court proceedings surrounding a break-up of a marriage proposal. Signature Gilbert and Sullivan parody of authority and human life fill this short opera. Faculty and staff personnel include Mark Plummer, Associate Professor of Music, music director; Martha Kasten, and Stacy Searle, Assistant Professor of Theatre, stage directors; and John Curran, Associate Professor of Theatre, scenic design.
